City tiles…

This week I finished up modeling the new city tiles I’ll be adding to the game. Each square represents a chunk of the map, and the elements on each square (fences, trees, walls, rocks, etc) will be randomized when the map is generated.  For example, if a “farm” zone is being created, it’ll choose one of the farm tiles and then randomly choose whether or not to add the fences, hay bales, ponds and such to that specific tile.

This system has been in place from the beginning, it’s just that now I’m adding a lot more variety to it. Previously, the map consisted of either buildings, roads or grassy areas….now you can see all the new areas that will be added (parks, farms, military bases, quarantine zones, demolished buildings, etc).

Here’s an image of the new models. They haven’t been textured yet so that’s why they’re white.

I also analyzed the visitor traffic this development blog has gotten over the last two years, in response to a thread on reddit where someone asked which marketing avenues they should pursue in order to drum up interest for their game. If you’re a game developer who wants to know which forums or websites it would be best to spread the word about your game on, this information may be useful to you!

    Awesome stuff! 🙂

  3. Gulo says:

When this game Is released for steam there should be promo items for other games like tf2. Lovin the progress keep it up man :3

    • Tyson Ibele says:

Well the first hurdle is getting on Steam….and even after that point, I don’t know what kind of API Steam offers to all of their developers to support that kind of thing. It could be the case that those types of promo items are only supported by bigger games like TF2.

Will the city tiles be destructible like the houses? And will there be special loot like automatic rifles and grenades in the military area?

  5. james says:

i love this dev blog- your work is great really looking forward to this
    keep at it

  6. Layton says:

No Peter, they’re not destructible, you won’t see them when you play the game, it’s just ‘coding’

  7. Doctar Bren says:

Hey tyson if there is to be a update will there be military base maps or laboratory places or even an airline area

    • Tyson Ibele says:

The city will have a military base yes, and possibly a particular sewer that is run by a mad scientist…

  12. Nick says:

Hey Tyson are these new tents, barns, military installations, etc. enterable?

    • Tyson Ibele says:

      Technically, yes.

While the devices I’m targeting won’t have the CPU power to run cloth simulations on the tent flaps and such, if you knock down the walls of the tents you might find something inside….and the walls of the barracks can be destroyed so you can enter too.

  13. jrocks3333 says:

    How is the progress going?

  14. Jack says:

Great work, good to see Zombox coming along nicely. Exactly how complex is the world gen, seeing some of those tiles have specific directions and appear to be designed to fit together?

    • Tyson Ibele says:

The tiles can be oriented in any direction. The reason they have those “jig saw” edges is to mask any overlap they might have with other tiles, so create seamless transitions between tiles.

Tyson from ur last update on lock picking I was wondering……. Like in skyrim or oblivion can lock picks break? that could add a challenge so if it does break, you would have to use another and u could stack the lock picks.

  16. Fadi98n says:

Tyson should Zombox be released this year or will it be stuck in Dev-Hell till 2014?

  17. Phredd says:

Lock Picking is one of my favorite game mechanics! its on Thief, elder Scrolls, etc. and i love the feeling of actually having picked the lock and getting the many goodies inside (or random junk, like scrap metal…) shouldve put this on last post but im too lazy to go back to it

  18. jrocks3333 says:

When is this game coming out! It looks so amazingly cool!

  19. Jason says:

    Hey Tyson

Will you update the game even when its finished, like adding more City Tiles to the game or new weapons or something else ?

  20. jrocks3333 says:

I wonder how the development is going?

    • Tyson Ibele says:

      It’s going well 🙂

Had a tight work deadline last week so I didn’t have a chance to do any Zombox stuff. This week I’ll hopefully be posting all of the new city tiles that have been textured. In the following weeks I’ll be working on the new randomized city generation system and a fly through of the whole city.

this game looks amazing and i cant wait for it to be out!!

  22. Nathan says:

Tyson like in games like sky rim or oblivion, can you customize ur characters face?, like there will be classes like the hobo class or medic class which grants ur character abilities but u could still decide what they look like , for instance, eyes, scars, hair, ect

  23. Cameron says:

Where’s the update it should have been here 2 weeks ago
